Ikea Story

The other day I went to Ikea to buy a couple of picture frames, thinking I'd be in and out in 15 minutes, but of course you can't just buy two things in Ikea, and it's like a shopping Bermuda Triangle. So, I ended up an hour or so later in a bit of a daze handing over £40 at the checkout and hauling my haul back home. The best things were some lengths of fabric. You cut your own whatever length you like, and then they weigh it to price it up.

These are the ones I bought, and although they haven't left their packaging yet, I'm fully intending on running up some cushion covers to freshen up our sitting room. Sometime.

Plagiarised Penguins

I love the Penguin Classics homewares, and have a couple of the cups which are my favourites to drink coffee out of. A while ago I saw canvases (screenprinted?) in The Conran Shop, which were nice and big and just so good looking. But I think they cost around £100, which was a bit much really. So, a few months ago I decided to make my own version. I couldn't decide which existing title to use, so I used a film title which I've always loved the sound of - The Beat That My Heart Skipped.

Then, last weekend my friend was having a birthday/housewarming party so I painted her a smaller version - Home Sweet Home! I've also posted them on the Living Etc. See What I Made forum, where each month someone wins some vouchers for the most inspiring show-and-tell post.

Buy Beeb

Having set up an Etsy page last year, stocked with some of my bears and a few paintings, then having sold the bears in real life rather than virtually, I've had a bit of a hiatus. But I've just restocked with 3 bears and 4 paper dolls, which are new little papier maché characters I'm trying out. Having a digital camera of my own makes all that so much easier - like posting on here - so I'm now dedicated to making some sales and keeping the shop going!! We'll see how it goes...

Hoop-La

I've invested in an embroidery hoop so that I can paint directly onto canvas/fabric then embroider away over the top. This is one of my first tries - from sketch to work-in-progress to pretty-much-done to trial-framed...

Phone Home

I've become really keen on making gifts for friends/family's birthdays rather than buying them. Although it's generally cheaper, it is a lot more time consuming but that feels so much nicer, like you've properly put some effort into it. It's almost too easy to pop to a shop and hand over your card.

A friend of mine recently got an iPhone, which she adores, and which was being temporarily housed in an old glasses case. So I decided to make her a new case for it, which is here.

It's slightly padded, and nice and colourful. My first attempt would have been way too small, and lies abandoned and unfinished by my sewing machine, and in fact this one is slightly too big, and could probably do with a popper or some velcro, but it seems to be doing the job as far as I know!

Finger Puppets

A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine was going for an interview as a teacher in a primary school. The day before, when she was preparing her lesson plan, she realised she needed some finger puppets. It was a Sunday, and hard to know where to go for finger puppets, so I offered to make some for her. So, I made some bear-type creatures by sewing round some paper cut outs, then painting on a face, some ears and some different patterns. They're barely bears (!), but I was quite pleased with them!!

Seadrift

I spent Easter in Cornwall, and thought I'd take the opportunity while down there to hand over three dolls I've just made to my sister's friend Vicki. She lives by the beach and turned her garage into a gorgeous gallery/shop called Seadrift a couple of years ago.

She opened for the season at Easter, and we went and celebrated with her over a glass of Buck's Fizz, on a lovely sunny morning. She was thrilled with the dolls, and gave them pride of place on her dresser amongst lots of treasures. I think they look just right in their new home!

Name of the Rose

A few weeks ago I tore out a picture in the Guardian newspaper showing an upcoming exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery of Cy Twombley paintings. I'd seen an exhibition of his work at the Tate Modern, not long ago and really like some of them, so made a note to visit this one if possible. Well, it turned out that the gallery is 2 minutes walk from my work, and I'd had no idea, so last week I popped in during my lunch break, and really liked it. This was my favourite, the others are a bit orangey for me, but red and light blue is one of my best colour combinations.

Mrs Doubtfire

A friend has just set up a new business called Mrs. Doubtfire - with her and others offering their services as PAs, nannies, cleaners, chefs. Serious multitasking! They are creating their website, and asked me to do a few relevant drawings that they might be able to use. These are my first rough attempts, and although done from my head (so details are probably not quite true to life), I quite like how they've come out. We'll see what happens...

I Heart Marmite

A little while ago I saw these Marmite design plates and straight away was desperate to own one (or the whole set really).

The moment passed, and they slipped my mind until just now, and I fear the desire is back with me and may have to be fulfilled. They do coasters, mugs and more here too. I just need to decide which colour would be best to eat my marmite-smothered crumpets off!

NYC Stories # 1: Specials

I've just read a post over on Café Mode about the new Marc Jacobs shop in Paris, mentioning his "Specials" range of weird and wonderful accessories at miniscule prices. Well, I went to New York a couple of weeks ago for a long weekend, and was staying round the corner from the dedicated Marc Jacobs Specials shop on Bleecker Street. Every time I tried to go there I was too early and it wasn't open yet, but on my last day, in fact my last hour, I decided to give it one last go, and boy was I glad I did!! The shop is tiny, and was pretty hectic, but they had some fab things. I bought a large version of a canvas bag I'd had my eye on for months (seen on the Internet, never in real life), this chunky turquoise and silver bracelet, and a t-shirt that's already had lots of good comments.

It was a very successful end to an otherwise pretty much shopping-free weekend. It's strange, normally designer labels don't do anything for me (which is just as well, money-wise), but Marc Jacobs has some kind of magnetic pull, maybe it's a combination of the logo, the humour in his designs, the man himself.... and of course the fact that these particular items are very affordable is a huge bonus!

Rule Britannia

On Sunday, I finally got round to going through some old magazines and tearing out anything useful so that I could get rid of (recycle) the rest. A couple of the pages that caught my eye had Union Jack cushions on...

This one by Vivienne Westwood for The Rug Company

These ones on gorgeous leather chairs in the home of fashion designer Sara Berman

Well, I had an old cushion lying around waiting for a new cover, so I decided to make my very own Union Jack cushion, using some blue cotton, cream calico and a scrap of red silk that I already had. The silk immediately started to fray and even tear along the stitching, so I had to patch it up before I'd even finished, but I'm really happy with the result. It's delicate, so I'm not going to put it on our sofa to get trashed, but its looking just fine perched at the top of my bed. I will take a picture of it tonight and pop it on here for posterity!

Original

Last Sunday I went to the Craft Council's Origin Craft Fair, at Somerset House. It was a lovely sunny afternoon, and Somerset House is such an elegant venue. I didn't stay for very long, but got quite inspired by some of the work I saw there. In fact, I dashed home to do some making of my own, and to finally stick a pile of cuttings into my new scrap book, but ended up going to the local pub quiz instead. My number one favourite was Samantha Bryan and her incredibly detailed fairy characters with their weird and wonderful accessories.

I love the knitted textures on these ceramics by Annette Bugansky, and the clever way they make a brittle, delicate material look cosy.

The fine line drawings on tea towels, laundry bags and other objets by Teresa Green are really simple and appealing.

And finally, I was very tempted by this suede bound notebook by Kim Robertson, with its hot and glamorous colours and graphic print reminiscent of Stella McCartney...

Patrick Heron

The last time I went to the Tate Modern, it was to see a Cy Twombly exhibition. It was a bit of a treat, as although I go there quite often (that stretch of the South Bank from Waterloo to London Bridge is one of my favourite parts of the city), I don't remember ever having paid to see a specific exhibition, because there's so much to see for free anyway. Well, my friend is now a member so we got to see the Cy Twombly for free, which was great. I love gallery shops, and almost always buy something - usually a couple of postcards or a notebook. This time though, the paintings we saw had made me feel quite inspired, and I ended up buying this book on Patrick Heron, who I'd heard of from the Tate St. Ives. When I picked it up I thought it'd be horribly expensive, as it's really big, and has loads of images, but it was quite reasonable and I thought it would be a lovely addition to my pretty much non-existent (non-fictionally) library, which it is except my bookshelves are too narrow so it just moves from surface to surface in my bedroom at the moment.

Stocked Up

It's been nearly a year since I signed up for a shop on online emporium Etsy. Well, I've finally got my act together and stocked my shop, with eight of my beeb toys, and three in a new series of paintings that I've been working on. This is a very exciting day! Now I just need to get the word out to get some some people through the virtual door of aforementioned shop, and fingers crossed make some sales.... watch this space!!

I've also just added a link on the side of the blog that shows thumbnails of the items in my shop, and takes you straight there.
